Chapter Seventeen
Max stood on the patio and glared at his lover. This was fucked up. “You might get to fuck my ass and tell me what to do in the bedroom, but no goddamn way am I going to sit down and shut up about this, Marcus!”
Lucky whimpered at his tone, and Marcus leaned down to pat her head before he straightened and leveled one of his trademark stern Master looks at Max. “Will you quiet down? You’re going to wake Jo up.”
“She should be awake. This is the most fucked up…” Max trailed off and dragged his hand through his hair, unable to think of anything bad enough with which to compare the situation. “Marcus, baby,” he tried again. “You have to tell her. We both have to tell her.”
“Tell me what?” Jo asked, sliding open the glass door. She was wearing one of Marcus’s shirts, sleeves rolled back to reveal her tanned forearms. Long legs stretched from the tail of the shirt. Her hair was a tangled mess around her shoulders. Max thought she looked thoroughly decadent, the personification of a wicked night of sex. His cock came instantly to life, despite his anger at his other lover’s idiocy.
Max walked over to Jo and swept her into his arms and buried his face against her hair. “Good morning, sunshine. How are you feeling? A little sore?”
“Max, honey, I’m not so sore that I don’t recognize a major fight brewing between the two of you. What’s going on?”
Max and Marcus locked gazes, apparently neither one willing to give an inch.
Finally, Jo cut through the tension. “Okay, boys. You’re going to have to play your reindeer games without me. I need hot coffee and a shower, in that order. Then I suppose I’ll head back to town. I need to figure out what to do about finding another place. Michael and his family are great, but I can only take so much of their goo, before I get a little nauseous.”
The two old friends stood on the patio and stared at each other long after Jo left to get her coffee. With a heartfelt sigh, Max moved closer to Marcus.
“Marcus, baby. Are you going to push me away, too?”
“Max, you can’t think…it’s not about—”
“What is this about? Let me see if I know you as well as I think I do. You’ve decided that Jo and I don’t really love you, not the real you. We crave to be dominated by the top Master in the city. And although you are an outstanding Dom—I mean, I have introduced you to all of my best customers—you don’t really have anything to offer us beyond that part of you. Is that about it?”
Stepping even closer, Max placed his hand against Marcus’s chest. “Wait, don’t answer yet. I forgot one important thing. Although you like to Dom in bed, you are perfectly capable of having a relationship beyond the Dom/sub world, but Jo and I are not capable of such complex nuances of feelings.
